Understanding Healthshare
What Is Zion HealthShare?
Zion HealthShare is a nonprofit, community-based alternative to traditional health insurance. Instead of paying premiums to an insurance company, members contribute a set monthly amount to a shared pool that helps cover each other's eligible medical expenses.
It is not health insurance. It's a community of people who voluntarily come together to share the financial burden of major medical needs. Zion HealthShare is open to everyone, with no religious requirements, no network restrictions, and no enrollment windows.

How It Works
Choose Your Initial Unshareable Amount (IUA)
When you enroll, you select your IUA, the amount you're responsible for per medical need before sharing begins. Options are $1,250, $2,500, or $5,000. Think of it like a per-incident deductible. Each household is responsible for no more than three IUAs in any rolling 12-month period.
Contribute Monthly
You make a monthly contribution to the community pool. These funds are used to share eligible medical expenses among members, not to pay corporate profits.
A Medical Need Arises
When you need care beyond what your Staywell Health membership covers, such as a specialist, hospital stay, or surgery, you present as a self-pay patient to receive cash-pay discounts, which helps keep costs low for the whole community.
Submit a Sharing Request
You submit your eligible expenses through the Zion HealthShare member portal. Once your IUA is met and the request is determined eligible, the community shares the remaining costs, often processed in as few as five business days with proper documentation.
Expenses Are Shared
Zion HealthShare facilitates payment directly to your provider or reimburses you for expenses you've already paid. Your provider advocate team is available to help coordinate throughout the process.
